This area traditionally includes the parts of Dentistry, which concern the diseases of the dental hard tissues (teeth) and the restoration of teeth to their former shape and function as well as the replacement of missing teeth. This may be achieved by restorations (fillings), crowns (caps) and/or bridges (fixed partial dentures).

 

The discipline is taught within and across several modules including Plaque Related Diseases, Endodontology and Prosthodontics (including Occlusion).

A very active research programme underpins the teaching of Conservative Dentistry. Current research interests include:

 

 

• Studies of dental caries affecting enamel (the outer covering of teeth)

 

 

• Lasers and their hard tissue applications in dentistry

 

 

• Dental Metrology - application of the science of measurement to dentistry, specifically to crown and bridgework where precision is important.
